The Pretty Gene Can Only Get You So Far…

Watching this new set of faces was somewhat strange to me because I had become so used to seeing last year’s models, but I’m sure that as the season progresses and each of the girls reveals more of their personalities, I’ll grow attached to a few of them as well.

It’s too early in the game for me to decide who will be taking the crown, however, I’ve already picked out my favorites in this season of America’s Next Top Model.

There were a lot of surprises in the premier episode, but the best surprise was seeing Twiggy! I still cannot believe it and I’m still trying to figure out how they swung it. I believe Twiggy will provide another dimension to the atmosphere (somewhat toned down without Janice) and you can almost feel the change in the air. ANTM is setting the stage to become a major player on the UPN network and that’s a good move.

But what happened to Nole? Is he gone for good too? Or is this just a season premiere thing they have going on? I guess we’ll just have to wait and see. In any event, having Mr. J. Alexander as the stand in shouldn’t be too bad – he adds flavor to the panel.

Moving on to the models. Sarah needs help. Seriously. Yes she has a look about her, but when you look at her from different angles, she loses her allure and above all else – she cannot walk.

I understand that ANTM is all about creating wonderful models as the season progresses, but methinks they won’t be able to work out all the issues in Sarah before this season is over. I will be quite surprised if she even survives the next 3 elimination rounds. I agree with Tyra on this one, she needs to step up the confidence level if she wants to survive.

During their first photo shoot, Jay stole the words from my mouth when he told Kim she didn’t impress him. She didn’t impress me either, at least, not with that shoot. I love Kim’s look, she’s a sexy tomboy in my eyes, but as we later find out – the pretty gene can only get you so far in the modeling world.

In life, it is best to keep your mouth shut and appear the fool than to open it and remove all doubt. Ashley proved this by messing up herself after she so eloquently expressed my thoughts about Kim’s performance at the shoot.

Ashley is missing something for me – refinement maybe? But not all models need to be refined, but they do have to be chameleons. They need to adapt to their surroundings and Ashley didn’t seem to know how to do that, at least not very well. And that came out in the end when the judges dismissed her. Sorry, the pretty gene can only bring you so far.

So far, Ebony is one of my favorite models. She really didn’t do anything too impressive, either with the runway walk or the photo shoot, but she has this amazing look about her that doesn’t disappear if you look at her from different angles.

Jayla is gorgeous and is one of those girls you want to shrink down to china doll size and place on your mantle piece and she has a really great “come hither” look that I’m sure can get the blood of just about any man in America boiling. She also seems sassy enough to hold her own though.

Diane is working it for the bootylicious crowd, but her look lacks luster. She’s a beautiful woman, but she’s missing that special model quality that you’ll find on the runways of Milan and Paris.

Nik’s walk needs a lot of work too, but it’s no where near as bad as Sarah’s and she certainly has a great look. There definitely is some hope for her and if she opens up throughout the competition, she really can take it all the way home.

My top picks for this season of America’s Next Top Model are: Ebony, Nik, Coryn, Nicole, and Jayla. This may change as the season progresses, it’s still early and any one of the girls I left out in the cold may just surprise me and bounce up into the radar.

  1. Elaine Moore Kane Says:

    Dear Sir/Madame,

As an avid watcher (along with my husband) of ANTM, I would
be remiss if I did not address a genre of women who are being
excluded. In that I am referencing the mature/fit women of our
society. As such, I am compelled to address this issue on behalf
of this often overlooked class. Just food for thought. Thanking
you in advance for your courteous attention.

    Kind regards,
Elaine Moore Kane (pronounced Kahn) emk
